Introduction

The main objective of M.A in Ethics of Governance and Public Service programme is to produce educated women and men with analytical minds and capability to articulate and reflect logically on the fundamental ethical issues in governance and public service. This would enable them to take their place as enlightened citizens who are capable of critically evaluating arguments, which bear on public affairs. Our goal is to equip students not just with an academic background for different trades or professions, but with important skills for living day by day, too. Minor Objectives Towards this major end, the minor objectives of our programme are the following: a)to develop in the students habits of clear, critical thinking within the framework of both an adequate ethical methodology and accepted norms of scholarship; b)to teach a thorough understanding of central subjects of contemporary ethical issues in governance and public service; c)to introduce students into the main methods of fundamental and applied ethics, in order to enable them to understand the works of the great moral philosophers and to provide them with the skills to do independent research in the humanities. d)to become a centre of excellence in research and teaching of ethics; e)to produce future academic staff for the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and also other academic institutions in Tanzania.


Objectives of the Programme

At the end of this programme, students will: a)have developed habits of clear, critical thinking within the framework of both normative and applied ethics; b)have learned a thorough understanding of central subjects of contemporary ethical issuessuch as abortion, homosexuality, climate change, distributive justice,development ethics, global justice, ethics in public service, corruption. c)have been introduced into the main methods of ethical analysis, in order to enable them to understand the works of the great philosophers and to provide them with the skills to do independent academic research in the humanities. d)have internalized ethical principles for being better moral agents as responsible citizens. have developed into future academic staff for the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and also other academic institutions in Tanzania.

Training in ethics of governance and public service yields a broad range of transferable skills in demand by the corporate management and marketing sectors, the social, community and public services, international development agencies and high profile global charities, heritage studies and tourism, environmental conservation, travel and hospitality industries, diplomacy, the banking and finance sectors, the creative and performing arts, traditional and digital journalism, mass media, language services, human rights and legal advocacy, community activism, gender awareness, education in all its aspects, policy making and analysis, marketing and advertising, local development sector, human resources and industrial psychology.
