Introduction

The B. A. (Film and Television Studies) programme is a three-year programme that aims at preparing students who will work skilfully and professionally in the area of film and television studies.


Objectives of the Programme

At the end of the programme, graduates shall be able to: a.Demonstrate a broad and comparative knowledge of the general scope of film studies in all of its major categories including film history, aesthetics, production, distribution, exhibition, theory and criticism. b.Demonstrate a critical understanding of the essential and movements in film history and its role as an art form and develop an awareness of the nature of film studies knowledge and challenges and opportunities of the film industry in Tanzania, Africa and the world at large c.Showcase knowledge and skills in acting, screenplay writing, production designing, producing, directing, editing, and cinematography, the analysis of film and the production processes, adopting stories from other literary forms such as short stories, novels, plays, etc. into films d.Demonstrate competence in understanding varieties of film forms and movements around the world. e.Demonstrate critical thinking in both identifying and analysing problems and issues in relation to the film industry and the society at large.

a.Entrepreneurial opportunities: Graduates of the programme can establish entrepreneurial prospects in various areas such as film and photography companies, organizing events, consultancy for literary, cultural and film works. Graduates from this programme can be self-employed as filmmakers, film directors, scriptwriters, film editors and cinematographers. b.Employment opportunities: Graduates of the programme can consider employment opportunities in cultural event planning and organization, festival planning and organization, heritage experts, cultural experts, and publishing. They can be employed as film production managers, film artist managers, film marketing managers, film curators, film distributors, film and television programmes reviewers, cultural officers and personnel, festival organizers and location managers. c.Leadership/Community-based opportunities: Graduates of the programme can also consider leadership roles or community-based roles where they can use their knowledge and skills in cultural and heritage development campaigns or as social campaign experts and analysts for their communities.
