Bachelor of Arts with Education

Introduction

This is a three-year degree programme that aims at preparing graduate teachers. The degree programme equips the graduates with skills and knowledge on various disciplines including Kiswahili, Geography, Economics, French, English language, English literature, History, and Political Science. Students enrolled in the B. A. Education programme are required to take two teaching subjects (content courses) and Education courses. The following teaching subject combinations are offered: a.History and Geography b.History and English c.History and Kiswahili d.English and Kiswahili e.English and Geography f.English and French g.History and Political Science (Civic education) h.English and English Literature i.English and Creative Arts (Music/Fine Art/Drama)

Objectives of the Programme

At the end of the programme, graduates shall be able to: a.Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the general principles of education and its theoretical perspectives in teaching and learning, administration, management, and curriculum. b.Demonstrates the content knowledge of their chosen teaching subjects and the professional ethics for the moral and professional conduct of teachers and other personnel in the practice of education in society. c.Show mastery in the analysis of syllabuses and preparation of teaching plans, prepare teaching-learning aids/media and select and use appropriate teaching-learning methods and strategies. d.Provide guidance and counselling to students and staff where necessary and in line with national educational standards and regulations e.Demonstrate an ability to assume responsibilities and leadership roles in and outside the teaching profession within the community and wider society and demonstrate skills and knowledge on curriculum design and implementation, teaching methodologies, as well as skills in education management and administration.

a.Entrepreneurial opportunities: Graduates of the programme can establish entrepreneurial prospects in various areas in advocacy and lobbying for educational matters, establishment of educational businesses such as schools, educational support services and institutions, consultant for educational services such as scholarships agencies, educational support services. b.Employment opportunities: Graduates of the programme can consider employment opportunities in ministries and ministerial departments, higher education institutions, teacher training colleges, secondary and primary schools. Graduates of the programme can be employed as education officers, curriculum developers, educational analysts, examination officers, training officers, education programme officers, educational advisors, educational specialists, educational book authors, teachers, school managers, government educational officers, educational logistics officers, educational counsellors, and educational researchers. c.Leadership/Community-based opportunities: Graduates of the programme can also consider leadership roles or community-based roles where they can use their knowledge and skills in volunteering and provision of educational support services in the community.
