Welcome to College of Humanities website

This newly formed college was formed on 2013 as a result of the 1994 Institutional Transformation Programme (ITP) that was designed to spearhead transformation in the University organizational structure in order to correspond to local and global changes and challenges.

“CoHU intends to promote inter- and multi-disciplinary activities in its services so as to transform social communities”.

The establishment of the College of Humanities was a significant event in the history of the university. Its foundation marks a new era of modification in teaching, research and consultancy. Nevertheless, efficacy of services provided by CoHU is essential in its support of the mission and vision of the University of Dar es Salaam.

Humanities at the University of Dar es Salaam

At the College of Humanities, we believe in providing our students with an academically rich and rigorous education that prepares them for careers after graduation, and for lifelong learning. In Humanities, you will learn critical thinking, communication and reasoning skills that are essential for today’s global ‘knowledge society’. Students are encouraged here to explore, debate, interrogate and interpret our thinking on what it means to be a human being.

The College of Humanities which is popularly referred to by its acronym CoHU, is endowed with over 168 renowned, highly qualified and experienced academics and researchers, most of whom are PhD holders. In addition, it has 20 administrative staff members. CoHU has facilities in its departments to enable students undertake advanced work and research under supervision for MA and PhD degrees of the University of Dar es Salaam.

Experiential Education

Humanities students build skills that are adaptable and applicable inside and outside the classroom. Applied Humanities, independent study and internship courses allow students to gain real-world experience through the practical application of classroom learning.

  • Archaeology and Heritage Studies – Field Practicum in Archaeology
  • History – History Practicum
  • Language Studies – Language Practicum
  • Philosophy and Religious Studies – Practical on Peace Building, Governance and Ethics
  • Creative Arts – Performance and Community Outreach
